The JCDB Story
I founded J-Chavez Design Build (JCDB) in 2012 with a passion for blending artistry and precision in architecture, building, and design. My journey began in the 1990s, inspired by my grandmother, Helvi Wamsley, a renowned San Francisco artist, and further shaped by my education at the University of Oregon's School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
Early in my career, I worked with leading architects in Oregon and Nevada, gaining valuable insights into high design, building science, and energy efficiency. My hands-on passion for construction and problem-solving earned me the nickname “MacGyver,” a mindset that is now central to JCDB's philosophy.
At JCDB, we specialize in complex remodels, second-story additions, and custom homes, seamlessly integrating modern functionality with timeless craftsmanship. By combining advanced tools like Chief Architect (Design) and JobTread (Project Management) with expertise as a Field Issuance Remodeling (FIR) Contractor, we manage permitting, inspections, and challenges with ease. Every project reflects our commitment to innovation, craftsmanship, and creating energy-efficient, long-lasting spaces.

I find inspiration in the world around me, drawing from architecture, travel, material craft, and the people I am fortunate to work alongside.
Fascinated by the connection between design and execution, I later expanded into contracting to deeply understand how things are made. This bridge between drawing and building heavily influences my design philosophy, but it also opened my eyes to the importance of the renovation journey itself. For me, the pursuit of excellence extends far beyond the physical structure; it requires a deep commitment to customer service and understanding the unique goals of each client to deliver an all-around premium experience.
Rather than relying on a single signature style, I look to this continually expanding base of knowledge to find clarity and insight in my work today. This approach fuels a collaborative design process, ensuring that every project is shaped by thoughtful intent, remains distinct, and serves as a unique reflection of its owners.
I have recently taken on a long-time interest to learn how to sail. As I apply my desire for technical mastery and adventure, it can be much like navigating a complex build—the variables may change, but the guiding pull toward discovery and rigorous refinement remains the same. I view every project, and every new horizon, as a welcome opportunity to learn, adapt, and continue growing.
